And then there was 5 — Caldwell wins pole vault crown; Leutheuser autos in hammer

The Hillsdale College Chargers is putting an emphasis on the world “field” when it comes to Track & Field.

Freshman Kayla Caldwell continued her stellar rookie season with a GLIAC Championship and an automatic qualifying jump in the women’s pole vault. My early report said Caldwell jumped 13’2″ — a huge personal record, ranking her just second to multiple national champion Lauren Stelten of Minnesota State Mankato.

Senior Anna Leutheuser didn’t want her senior season to end at day one of the GLIAC Championships. The senior saved her best for the finale, throwing around 55-meters, or about 180-feet — a new school record, also.

That’s five GLIAC champions in day one — most likely one of the most successful day one’s in Hillsdale Charger Track and Field history. Here’s the quick recap:

  • Senior Jason Stomps wins hammer throw — 217’9″ (auto)
  • Senior Jared Krout wins long jump — 24’4″
  • Junior Gwen Buchhop wins javelin — n/a
  • Junior Circe Cansino wins long jump — n/a
  • Freshman Kayla Caldwell wins pole vault — 13’2″ (auto)
  • Senior Anna Leutheuser automatically qualifies for NCAAs in hammer, places 3rd – 180′
