11 Chargers heading to NCAA Outdoor Championships

Like I said earlier, more of a preview is on the way.

The Accepted Women’s List.

The Accepted Men’s List.

3 on the guy’s side; 8 on the women’s.

It’s Coming…

I’ve been really busy – but a NCAA Championship preview is coming!

Men and women 4×400 place 4th to end 2010 GLIAC meet

I’ve been at work all day, wishing I was in the rain, at the track meet.

The meet just wrapped up. It was cold and rainy. Reports say the men’s team went about 3:20 and placed 4th. Senior Shawn McKinstry ran down two teams in the final 100m to secure the 4th place finish.

McKinstry said via text the men’s team has third place wrapped up and the women could have 2nd place pending final results from the field.

The women ran to a fourth place finish in the 4×400.

Check back for more results soon.

The Hillsdale College Chargers marched onto the campus of Ferris State University looking to take care of a business. The Chargers had one of the most dominant day one competitions in recent history.

Here’s whose going to tomorrow’s finals:

  • Women’s 100m: Circe Cansino, Cathryn Humphries and Jazmin Williams
  • Women’s 200m: Marta Scheiwe, Cathryn Humphries and Circe Cansino
  • Women’s 400m: Marta Scheiwe and Erin Benjamin
  • Women’s 800m: Jennifer Shaffer
  • Women’s 1500m: Amanda Putt
  • Women’s 400H: Jazmin Williams
  • Men’s 200m: Jared Krout and Skylar Dooley
  • Men’s 400m: Jared Krout
  • Men’s 1500m: Alex Ralston and Jeff Wysong

GLIAC CHAMPIONS:

  • Senior Jason Stomps wins hammer throw — 217’9″ (auto)
  • Senior Jared Krout wins long jump — 24’4″
  • Junior Gwen Buchhop wins javelin — 131′-10″
  • Junior Circe Cansino wins long jump — 18’4.25″
  • Freshman Kayla Caldwell wins pole vault — 13’1.5″ (auto and ties GLIAC record)

And then there was 5 — Caldwell wins pole vault crown; Leutheuser autos in hammer

The Hillsdale College Chargers is putting an emphasis on the world “field” when it comes to Track & Field.

Freshman Kayla Caldwell continued her stellar rookie season with a GLIAC Championship and an automatic qualifying jump in the women’s pole vault. My early report said Caldwell jumped 13’2″ — a huge personal record, ranking her just second to multiple national champion Lauren Stelten of Minnesota State Mankato.

Senior Anna Leutheuser didn’t want her senior season to end at day one of the GLIAC Championships. The senior saved her best for the finale, throwing around 55-meters, or about 180-feet — a new school record, also.

That’s five GLIAC champions in day one — most likely one of the most successful day one’s in Hillsdale Charger Track and Field history. Here’s the quick recap:

  • Senior Jason Stomps wins hammer throw — 217’9″ (auto)
  • Senior Jared Krout wins long jump — 24’4″
  • Junior Gwen Buchhop wins javelin — n/a
  • Junior Circe Cansino wins long jump — n/a
  • Freshman Kayla Caldwell wins pole vault — 13’2″ (auto)
  • Senior Anna Leutheuser automatically qualifies for NCAAs in hammer, places 3rd – 180′

Cansino wins long jump crown; Buchhop repeats in the javelin

Maybe her boyfriend rubbed off on her after all.

I’ve gotten reports (aka texts) that junior Circe Cansino won the women’s long jump — making for a male/female Hillsdale sweep in the event. Cansino’s boyfriend Senior Jared Krout won the event earlier with a leap of 24’4″. I’m still waiting on reports of Cansino’s jump.

Junior Gwen Buchhop also showed the GLIAC why she is a dominant javelin thrower — winning the event the second consecutive year.

The women’s long jump scored three Charger athletes, placing 1st, 6th and 8th.

Check back for more updates.

UPDATE: Stomps, Krout, win GLIAC crowns

Getting reports in that seniors Jason Stomps and Jared Krout have the hammer throw and long jump respectively.

NOW CONFIRMED, Stomps threw 217′-9″ which would moves him to one of the top rankings in the country and make him eligible to compete at the U.S. Championships this summer. Teammate Aaron Falk took 4th with a throw of 198’11″

Krout won the long jump with another huge jump of 24’4″ — the first season where he has gone over 24-feet on more than three occasions.

Football hybrid Andre Holmes was third in the long jump. Junior Chuck Wysong was 4th in the steeple chase.

Check back for more updates.

GLIACS Championship Preview: Chargers head to Ferris for the conference finale

I know it sounds cliché and perhaps slightly obvious — but the Chargers will either walk out of GLIAC Championship dominantly or fall to the bottom of the standings.

Obvious right? You either perform well, or you don’t. The Chargers are peaking at the right time it seems, but right along with the rest of the GLIAC.

This is one of the most talented pools of athletes probably in recent GLIAC history — and it’s sure to be one hell of a meet.

Last weekend athletes from Ashland domianted in the 400 meters, with two runners going sub 47. Last year, if you remember, Charger senior Jared Krout broke the GLIAC record witha 46.69. See video below:

But this is Krout’s goodbye to the GLIAC. The athlete is a gamer, and won’t settle for second place. Anything short of a GLIAC championship in his signature race will be a disappointment — so how will he do it? A bum hamstring hampered him in the indoor season, but he came back with a vengeance this outdoor season. We went undefeated in the 400 for the first half of the season, going sub-48 on two different occasions. His time of 47.96 is ranked 5th going into the GLIAC meet.

There are so many great competitions happening — especially the men’s hammer throw, where the top 5 in the GLIAC are in the top ten in the country. A few of them have already qualified for the U.S. Championships.

Watch out for Cathryn Humphries, freshman sprint sensation, to take home freshman of the year honors — and possibly GLIAC runner of the year. She’s ranked No. 1 in the 100m and 200m.

Humphries goes sub 12 to highlight Jesse Owens meet

Freshman sprint sensation Cat Humphries went 11.99 in a wind-legal 100m race at the Jesse Owens invite at Ohio State University this past weekend.

Freshman Cat Humphries competes indoor earlier this year.

The Chargers went into the meet before still beat up after a long Gina Relays weekend, so performances weren’t anything too special. The Chargers unload this week before the GLIAC Championships.

Check out results, here.

Nothing up on the Hillsdale Chargers page yet.

Come back for a GLIAC preview this week.
